How To Get To Spain To Find Your Dream Home

Is your heart set on a coastal villa paradise on the Costa del Sol? Or are you craving a classic apartment in the heart of old-town Seville? If you know where you want to buy property in Spain and have a clear vision of what you’re looking for, the next step is to plan your visit and meet with local real estate agents.

Throughout this blog, our team of mortgage experts with invaluable understanding of Spain’s property market explore how to get to España and the travel requirements you need to know.

Getting to Spain

Whether you currently reside in Europe, the US or elsewhere, travelling to and from sunny Spain is super simple!

  • Air travel

España is a popular and well-connected destination – there are direct and indirect flights available across the world to most of its major airports, such as Madrid-Barajas, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga, among others.

Boasting 46 airports, including international and regional ones, you can easily reach the country from across the globe and catch domestic flights if needed while property viewing in Spain.

  • Train travel

If you live in Portugal, Andorra or France, which share a land border with España, travelling via train is a great option to avoid the hustle and bustle of the airport. If flying isn’t for you and you live elsewhere in Europe, such as the UK, you could always make your way to Paris by car or train, where you can hop on the high-speed service that runs to Barcelona.

It also offers a beautiful scenic view of Spain’s captivating countryside and vibrant cities, so you get a real taste of the country before you’ve even bought your home.

Additionally, the interregional rail network in this dreamy country is efficient and dependable, meaning you can extend your property search via train if you wish.

However, if you’re planning on buying a property in Spain off the mainland, such as in the Balearic or Canary Isles, you’ll need to catch a flight.

  • By ferry

Depending on where you’re based, you might be able to cross over to Spain via ferry. By choosing this way, you can take your car and travel across the country freely on your terms, at your own pace.

The decision is entirely up to your travel preferences!

Will I need a visa to enter Spain?

Typically, if your trip is purely to view properties in Spain, meet estate agents and attend legal appointments, then this is all permitted on a tourist stay, so you won’t need a visa. Tourist stays can last for up to 90 days or less.

However, this does depend on your country of citizenship.

Countries within the Schengen zone, including Spain and 28 other European nations, have free movement between each other, including France, Germany and Norway. These citizens can visit Spain visa-free for up to 90 days.

There are also visa exempt countries not in the Schengen area, such as the UK, US and Canada, whose nationals can also enjoy a short stay for viewing property in Spain. But as of late 2025, visitors from these nations will require an ETIAS, which is a travel authorisation for short-term stays in the EU.

Yet, some countries do require visas to enter Spain, even for tourist stays. Be sure to check the requirements for your nation of citizenship to find out if this applies to you.
